Unboxing Teamwork at LIFT

On November 9th, 2023, students from Detroit schools Chandler Park Academy and Western International High School participated in an UnboxedTM challenge event at LIFT. The UnboxedTM challenge was hosted by Michigan Technological University’s Mind Trekkers program, an educational outreach initiative that brings the awe and power of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) to communities around the country.

Today the ARM Institute welcomed Dr. Jill Biden, First Lady of the United States, and U.S. Acting Secretary of Labor Julie Su to our Mill 19 facility in Pittsburgh, PA, which we share with Carnegie Mellon University. The visit centered on Pittsburgh’s Workforce Hub designation by the White House. Pittsburgh is one of five national Workforce Hubs where President Biden’s Investing in America agenda—including the American Rescue Plan, Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, CHIPS and Science Act, and Inflation Reduction Act—are catalyzing private and public investments and creating good-paying jobs.

The National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM) and America Makes are proud to announce the winners of the “Improvements in Manufacturing Productivity via Additive Capabilities and Techno-Economic Analysis (IMPACT)” directed project call funded by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense, Research and Engineering Manufacturing Technology Office (OSD(R&E)) and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL), worth a total of $11.7M.

Sinclair Community College Hosts Over 350 Students for Manufacturing Day 2023

On Friday, October 6th, Sinclair Community College hosted its second annual Manufacturing Day event in Dayton, Ohio. This event, organized by Sinclair FlexFactor Program Manager Julie Huckaba, brought together 369 students from local middle- and high schools, 26 teachers, and numerous industry partner representatives to celebrate National Manufacturing Day. The student turnout was double that of the inaugural 2022 event. All the students are completing the FlexFactor project-based learning program with Julie and her team this semester, during which they are identifying a real-world problem they want to solve, conceptualizing a product enabled by Flexible Hybrid Electronics (FHE) to solve that problem, building a business model to sell their product, and then presenting it in a final pitch to a panel of judges.

America Makes Announces ‘DoD Organic Industrial Base Modernization Challenge’ Project Call

America Makes, in cooperation with our fellow Manufacturing Innovation Institutes (MII) and the OSD Manufacturing Technology Program (ManTech), is proud to announce the Department of Defense (DoD) Organic Industrial Base (OIB) Modernization Challenge Project Call addressing dual-use applications that are responsive to the specific needs of the DoD and the domestic manufacturing industry. The DoD expects to award up to $2.5M in funding for this challenge with individual project budgets not to exceed $500K.

MxD today launched the Cyber Playbook: Ensuring Cybersecurity in Additive Manufacturing, the second playbook in the cyber series. This playbook addresses unique considerations for Department of Defense (DoD) Risk Management Framework (RMF) compliance in the deployment of additive manufacturing devices, commonly referred to as 3D printers.

ARM Institute Hosts Manufacturing Day

Earlier this month, the ARM Institute continued its annual tradition hosting a Manufacturing Day event in collaboration with our Pittsburgh facility neighbors and collaborators, Carnegie Mellon University’s Manufacturing Futures Institute and Catalyst Connection. Our 2023 event was our largest event yet – we welcomed about 150 regional high school students, teachers, and administrators into our Mill 19 facility to explore careers in manufacturing through discussion pods, an exhibit hall of training providers, technology demonstrations, and tables from local manufacturers. 30 external local partners supported this year’s event. This year also featured a new session for teachers, administrators, guidance counselors, and other influencers to learn about the many resources available to help them communicate about the value of manufacturing careers.
