BioMADE: Revitalizing U.S. Biomanufacturing and Fostering Collaboration

The 2023 SIMB Annual Meeting took place in Minneapolis, MN, bringing together over 250 presenters and attendees from industry and academic institutions to discuss advances in microbial biotechnology. The industry-academic exchange that takes place at the SIMB conferences is a great example of the collaboration that fuels biomanufacturing innovation. This year’s meeting featured a special session guided by BioMADE. BioMADE is a Manufacturing Innovation Institute (MII) and part of the national network of Manufacturing USA institutes, which aim to secure U.S. global leadership in advanced manufacturing through large-scale public-private collaboration. The institute was officially launched in April 2021 with an $87 million, seven-year award from the Department of Defense (DoD) and received a $450 million budget increase in March 2023.

OSD ManTech's OIB Modernization Challenge Advances Technology Innovations 

The OSD Manufacturing Technology Program hosted representatives from five Department of Defense Manufacturing Innovation Institutes and their member companies for an Organic Industrial Base Modernization Challenge pitch event at the MxD MII facility in Chicago on February 7, 2023. Following an October workshop to identify crucial technological needs, OSD ManTech initiated the OIB Modernization project call through the MIIs set to offer up to $2.5 million in OSD-sponsored government funding to five MII-member winners. This resulted in 104 proposal submissions from member companies. Nine projects delivered their proposals to a panel of OIB experts, industry leadership and the OSD ManTech Director, Tracy Frost based on their projected positive impact across the 47 DoD-owned OIB sites.

RFP: Pittsburgh-Based Rapid Manufacturing Training

In partnership with the Department of Labor (DoL), the ARM Institute is committed to rapidly upskilling and placing displaced workers in family-sustaining careers. For the last three years, the ARM Institute has been working with AmSkills, located in the Tampa, FL, to deliver a series of career discovery manufacturing bootcamps. These two-week long rapid bootcamps provide individuals the opportunity to discover a multitude of manufacturing opportunities and to be “job-ready” at the end of the bootcamp. Through the two weeks, potential employees are also gaining soft skills such as interviewing techniques and resume updating/building.
