DoD and OSD ManTech Issues $26.6M in Awards to Accelerate Hypersonics Technology Development
By OSD ManTech
April 22, 2024
- The Department of Defense, through the Office of the Secretary of Defense (OSD) Manufacturing Technology (ManTech) office, has awarded the Joint Acceleration of Hypersonic Vehicle Aerostructure Alternatives (JAHVAA) opportunity a total of $26.6M to nine performers. JAHVAA will improve hypersonic systems design through extended processing development and testing of alternative high temperature materials.
There is a need to develop new and affordable hypersonic systems in the DOD, which creates demand for materials development, testing, and improved processes. The JAHVAA program addresses this demand for hypersonic system materials and processing technology development and will enable the U.S. Industrial Base (IB) to rapidly respond to future demands and meet warfighter mission requirements.
The performers will conduct development and testing of non-Carbon/Carbon Thermal Protection Systems (TPS) materials to establish trusted design allowable data, driving down material transition risks and enabling greater flexibility in hypersonic systems design.

2
MARTS OTA, managed by National Security Technology Accelerator (NSTXL) and sponsored by Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Crane Division, JAHVAA will be structured as a series of three challenge problems, in which the performers are tasked with demonstrating their proposed material and processing capability to produce a series of increasingly complex and relevant part geometries in each phase. This is expected to be executed in a 36-month period of performance.
NSTXL hosted an event in June 2023 to provide information about the projects. Through government and industry collaboration, the JAHVAA program is harnessing the best available technology from both traditional and non-traditional defense companies for hypersonic systems improvement.
The Strategic & Spectrum Missions Advanced Resilient Trusted Systems (S²MARTS)
, managed by NSTXL, is the premier rapid OT contracting vehicle for the Department of Defense (DoD) in trusted microelectronics, strategic & spectrum mission, and other critical mission areas. The Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC), Crane Division created S²MARTS to grow and engage an elite network of innovators, shorten the path to defense prototype development, and advance national security efforts.
