America Makes Offers TRX in Conjunction with Rapid + TCT Conference

America Makes hosted a special Technical Review & Exchange (TRX) event on June 26 during the annual RAPID + TCT Conference in Los Angeles, CA. Under the backdrop of North America’s largest industrial and additive manufacturing (AM) event, the Institute welcomed over 75 engineers, decision-makers, government, members, and partners from every corner of the U.S. AM industry.

Institutes Play Increasing Role in Driving Economic Impact

Several of the 17 institutes in the Manufacturing USA network are often key players in convening stakeholders for their region’s economic development. Two of the institutes received significant funding from the Department of Commerce’s Economic Development Agency (EDA) Build Back Better (BBB) initiative, and three institutes recently received EDA grants associated with the CHIPS and Science Act. Another institute’s host received a grant from the Department of Defense’s (DoD) funding from the CHIPS and Science Act.

America Makes Announces ‘DoD Organic Industrial Base Modernization Challenge’ Project Call

America Makes, in cooperation with our fellow Manufacturing Innovation Institutes (MII) and the OSD Manufacturing Technology Program (ManTech), is proud to announce the Department of Defense (DoD) Organic Industrial Base (OIB) Modernization Challenge Project Call addressing dual-use applications that are responsive to the specific needs of the DoD and the domestic manufacturing industry. The DoD expects to award up to $2.5M in funding for this challenge with individual project budgets not to exceed $500K.

America Makes Announces Two Project Calls Worth Nearly $12M in Funding

The National Center for Defense Manufacturing and Machining (NCDMM) and America Makes have announced two new open project calls funded by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense, Research and Engineering Manufacturing Technology Office (OSD (R&E)), and the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) worth a total of $11.75M. This is the largest funding opportunity launched by America Makes since its inception in 2012. Each project call has two areas of focus. One award is anticipated for each topic area with the maximum request for funding varying depending upon the topic being addressed.

Tech Official Says Manufacturing Advances Are Key to National Security

Advances in manufacturing capabilities are critical to the Defense Department's overall national security strategy, a senior Pentagon technology official said today. Steven G. Wax, acting deputy chief technology officer for science and technology, underscored the role of manufacturing in providing the U.S. military with capabilities to deter conflict or persevere in conflict if deterrence fails.

America Makes and ANSI Publish Standardization Roadmap for Additive Manufacturing Version 3.0

Today, America Makes and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) announced the publication of the Standardization Roadmap for Additive Manufacturing, Version 3.0, developed by the America Makes and ANSI Additive Manufacturing Standardization Collaborative (AMSC). The roadmap describes the current and desired future standardization landscape for additive manufacturing (AM) and focuses on industrial market sectors using AM technologies. A total of 141 standardization gaps (including 60 new gaps) are identified with corresponding recommendations across the AM lifecycle areas of design; precursor materials; process control; post-processing; finished material properties; qualification and certification; nondestructive evaluation; maintenance and repair; and data. The hope is that the roadmap will be broadly adopted by the user community to facilitate a more coordinated approach to the future development of AM standards.

The number of anticipated awards and maximum funding will vary depending on the topic area being addressed.
