The Department of War (DoW) Manufacturing Technology (ManTech) Program marked its 70th anniversary this week with a series of commemorative events at the Pentagon, celebrating seven decades of bridging the gap between technology development and full-scale production.
Established by Congress in 1956, ManTech was created to solve manufacturing challenges too costly or risky for industry to tackle alone. Since its inception, the program's mission has remained unchanged: ensuring the United States possesses the manufacturing capabilities needed to deliver the technologies that defend America. From precision-guided weapons and stealth aircraft to microelectronics and advanced materials, ManTech has consistently reduced production risk, improved affordability, and strengthened the broader Defense Industrial Base.
Honoring Decades of Mission Support
The anniversary milestones commenced with a formal ceremony in the Pentagon Auditorium, dedicated to recognizing seventy years of continuous mission support. The event spotlighted award-winning projects in defense manufacturing technology from across the military services, honoring the collaborative efforts that drive technological superiority. Keynote remarks emphasized that advanced manufacturing is a strategic national security capability, essential for translating laboratory breakthroughs into scalable, production-ready systems to support the warfighter in a complex global threat landscape.
The ceremony culminated in an award presented to the senior leader and primary representative of a DoW Component for their project’s outstanding success. This year’s prestigious Principals’ Honor Award recognized the groundbreaking achievement of the Air Force Research Laboratory's F-35 Inlet Duct Robotic Drilling project. In addition to celebrating individual project achievements, the event highlighted the far-reaching impact of the wider manufacturing innovation network. The occasion marked the official announcement of a ninth DoW Manufacturing Innovation Institute (MII), FutureTEX focused on revolutionary fibers and textiles. Established through an Other Transaction Agreement, this MII is positioned to help revitalize domestic production of critical advanced materials and secure national supply chains.
On the afternoon of August 10th, the celebration continued in the Hall of Heroes with the ManTech Personnel Honors Program. This ceremony recognized the individual contributors over the many years whose meritorious service, technical excellence, and innovative contributions have been the driving force behind the program's success.
ManTech’s 70-year commemoration culminated, August 11, with an impressive display of groundbreaking technologies from each of its programs: Manufacturing Science and Technology; the Joint Defense Technology Panel; the DoW MIIs; Manufacturing Education and Workforce Development; and the Joint Additive Manufacturing Working Group. Held in the Pentagon's 2nd Floor Apexes, the exhibition offered DoW employees a hands-on look at the cutting-edge technologies currently in development. Highlighting 16 Exhibitors showcasing 70+ technologies, representatives and leadership from the Army, Navy, Air Force, Defense Logistics Agency, and the DoW MIIs were on site to demonstrate how the latest advancements in robotics, digital engineering, and artificial intelligence are modernizing military operations and strengthening warfighter readiness.
