The Department of Defense awarded BioMADE as the Bioindustrial Manufacturing Innovation Institute in October 2020. BioMADE officially launched in April 2021. BioMADE opened its first project call in April 2021, funding Technology and Innovation research and Education and Workforce Development projects. The BioMADE mission it to enable domestic bioindustrial manufacturing at all scales, develop technologies to enhance U.S. bioindustrial competitiveness, de-risk investment in relevant infrastructure, and expand the biomanufacturing workforce to realize the economic promise of industrial biotechnology
