Develops enabling manufacturing technology – new processes and equipment – for implementation on Department of Navy weapon system production lines.
Navy ManTech is an industrial preparedness program focused on manufacturing improvements for key naval platforms. Navy ManTech funds projects and develops enabling manufacturing technology, such as new processes and equipment for DoD weapon system production lines that deliver the highest impact manufacturing technology to benefit the fleet when implemented. Focused on affordability, expanded throughput, and enhanced capability, Navy ManTech supports industry’s ability to expand production at scale throughout a weapon system’s life-cycle. Ancillary impacts include supply chain enhancement, productivity improvements, span time reduction, and operational availability.
Currently, Navy ManTech is focused on manufacturing improvements for key acquisition platforms: VIRGINIA Class submarine (VCS), COLUMBIA Class submarine (CLB), CVN 78 Class aircraft carrier, DDG 51 Class destroyer, and F-35 Lightning II aircraft, as well as PEO Integrated Warfare Systems (IWS) weapon systems for the ship classes.
By responding to the needs of the Navy for the production and repair of platforms, systems, and equipment, Navy ManTech helps reduce acquisition and total ownership costs by developing, maturing, and transitioning key manufacturing technologies and processes. Investments focus on weapon systems that result in the most benefit to the warfighter.
The Navy ManTech is managed by the Office of Naval Research (ONR), with direct oversight from the Chief of Naval Research. Navy ManTech operates synergistically with other industrial base programs, such as the Maritime Industrial Base (MIB) Program and National Shipbuilding Research Program (NSRP), and complies with USC Title 10, Section 4841 and DoD 4200.15.
Navy ManTech works with defense contractors, the Naval Research Enterprise, Navy acquisition Program Offices, and academia to develop improved processes and equipment. The program promotes timely implementation to strengthen the defense industrial base. With expertise in specific technology areas, the seven Navy ManTech Centers of Excellence (COEs) play a key role in the definition and execution of the program. The COEs provide a focal point for the development and transfer of new manufacturing processes and equipment in a cooperative environment with industry, academia and DoD agencies:
- Develop and demonstrate manufacturing technology solutions for identified defense manufacturing issues.
- Provide advice to the ManTech program officers concerning program formulation.
- Facilitate the transfer of developed manufacturing technology.
- Provide consulting services to defense industrial activities and industry.
- Serve as corporate residences of expertise in their particular technological areas
